Tuesday September 19th to Saturday September 23rd 2023

BASE CAMP is the Longreach Showgrounds (the GZ for Registration and the opening Event)

We express our gratitude to the Reviewers and Groundspeak for assistance in establishing this unique geocaching experience.
We acknoweldge support from the Longreach Regional Council in providing BASE CAMP for QOGM Days 1 and 2

The Queensland Outback Geocaching Muster (QOGM) is an annual event held right in the middle of Spring,
around the time of the October long-weekend School Holiday season (QLD),
covering some of the principal Outback Regional or Shire Council areas of Queensland.

QOGM exists to encourage new Geocachers to and in the Outback, and for all to find new and exciting Geocaches, to attend Events, and to have FUN!
QOGM brings Geocachers into the Queensland Outback, where a significant financial input can be made into the local economy.

    • In 2018, the event was based in the Barcaldine Region.
    • In 2019, the event was be based in Blackall and the blackall/Tambo Region.
    • In 2021, the event was held in Cunnamulla and the Paroo Region.
    • In 2022, the event was held in Charleville and the Murweh Region
    • In 2023, the final event is in Longreach.

So what happens?
Upwards of 200 geocaches of various types, sizes and level of difficulty are placed in the regions by our team which always includes some local geocachers.
We try to include a geoart or two where possible.
There is always a series of puzzle caches in the geoart form of a question mark.
In Cunnamulla, we were fortunate enough to have a series of T5 caches requiring the use of water craft.
Unfortunately due to revised Geocaching HQ Guidelines, we are no linger able to provide a Challenge Trail as we did for the first three QOGMs.

QOGM is a Muster. Or, this year, TWO Musters.
A
full day is designated for this activity.
We define a Geocaching Muster as an "assembly of geocachers" to participate in a "round-up" of a "mob of geocaches".
Mustering is done by vehicle, each containing a group of cachers with a designated purpose.  This is CAR POOLING.  Each vehicle creates a Team Name.
Car Pooling may be self-pre-arranged, or organized during the Registration process.  Team Names are then registered at the Base Camp by Wednesday afternoon.
In each vehicle, one is the designated Driver.  The second is a Navigator, the third is a Recorder, and the fourth and any subsequent cachers are "spotters"
Spotting is an essential activity for the competitions involved along the way.
The caches are along pre-determined outback roadways mostly navagable by conventional vehicle.
Each geocache will have a pre-determined "First to Find" VEHICLE allocated by random draw, and vehicles depart a nominated start-point at set intervals.
This years Flights Trail takes us north from Longreach and back around a loop, with a lunch stop in Muttaburra.
This year's Fantasy Trail takes us along the Thompson River to the south, across to Isisford, then home via Ilfracombe.

The Muster is not a competition, for example, like a car rally.
The Muster Caches themselves are generally "themed".
In Barcaldine, is was a "Sculpture Trail". In Blackall is was a "Turd Trail". In Cunnamulla, it was an "Opal Trail". In Charleville, it was a "Muster by the Stars" trail. In Longreach, it is two trails - "Flights" and "Fantasy".

NOTE: While there is day-time travelling involved, Longreach is always the returning point.

Geocachers are encouraged to stay a while - to support the local community.
Ask for receipt for everything you purchase within the Region.
Receipts are deposited daily in a collection box, and a random draw of a receipt will result in a "lucky draw prize".
At the end of QOGM, we tally the receipts to obtain an idea of how much dollar input our activities generated for the local community.
Over the past three QOGMs, cachers have spent around $45,000 in food, accommodation, fuel, and other purchases and activities during their stay in the area.
In Charleville and surrounds, it was close to $88,000.
